Earth Day Celebrations at the Senator Theater

The Senator Theater is hosting a drumming and rhythm filled weekend of events and activities. They are showing "Baraka" free this Saturday for Earth Day the 18th, with an open one hour drum jam from noon to 1pm. They are also encouraging folks who want to do some drumming during the films "Stop Making Sense" and the Peter Gabriel concert films this Friday and Saturday evenings to bring along a drum or shaker. MASTER DRUMMER ADAMA DEMBELE
Adama brings his family's 33generations of music from Ivory Coast to Bodhi Farms, Reisterstown, Maryland on Saturday, July 5th. "Djembéso" in the West African dialect Bambará means "the house of djembé". Adama chose that name because his family has been playing the djembe for 33 generations and his natal home is known as the house where the djembe is played.
The music he teaches is enlivened with songs, invites people to dance, sing, and laugh while experiencing a sense of community and belonging. Instruction will be made on the following instruments: Djembe, the Kenkeni, the Sangban, the Doundounba, Bells and Shakers.

Bodhi Farms is a beautiful, early 1800’s farm located just outside of Baltimore. Weather permitting we will be drumming underneath two 200+ year-old maple trees. Otherwise we will be located on the porch of the historic farmhouse. Greetings!

I am Daveed Korup, Executive Director for BIRDS (Baltimore International Rhythm & Drumming Society) and I am announcing an open call for some amazingly inventive and "out of the box" creative individuals who might be interested in making a difference. For those who have never experienced a BIRDS Festival, I invite yo to visit our website at: www.drumtogether.org. There are some fantastic pictures posted on-line for this pawst year's event. These pictures are from the two evening concerts and have been provided by Eric Willison, President of the Mill Valley Cultural Arts Umbrella (www.millvalleyarts.org); click on the BIRDS link under the Latest News banner. We will be posting many of these on the BIRDS’ site shortly. If anyone took pictures during the Saturday street fair, we are looking for new photos for the website. You will receive proper photo credit and a link to your web page, should you have one and wish a link.

On to other matters, John Millen, our current Board President, has informed me that he wishes to step down, after many years of dedicated service to the festival. I congratulate John on his extensive commitment and dedication to the community. He has expressed his desire to continue serving on the board in a sort of emeritus capacity. Institutional memory is vital to the success of any organization.

So where does this leave BIRDS? Well, to put on a festival that can reach a maximum potential public requires people who can work together to create the event. We need people who have fundraising & grant writing experience. Additionally, we need people who have skills in promotion & marketing…audio, photo & video production… programming & logistics... community education, etc. We are looking for imagination, innovation and creative problem solving.

This is a tall task!!! However, it cannot be done successfully by just a few people. This is especially true when taking into account that everyone has a life outside BIRDS: i.e. work, school, family and other obligations. BIRDS is a community-based organization that needs a strong community behind it.

Now, to next topic: the BIRDS’ Board. I am announcing that there are six to ten openings for new board members. We are looking for people who want to be community builders and who wish to influence the future direction of the Baltimore International Rhythm Festival. The board needs people who can do all those items I addressed above, plus bookkeeping and general office assistance.

There are no limits to the possibilities that can be accomplished if we work together. That said, it is important for everyone to realize that for BIRDS to move forward we need people to step up and take on these various tasks.

The beauty of this is that no one will be asked to do anything outside their expertise. If we can get enough folks to become involved, then no one will have to work too hard and much more will get accomplished. It is truly up to the community to decide the direction of the organization. It should never reflect just one point of view, but many.

Well, there you have it. I am challenging everyone to get involved. It’s now up to all of us to make this wonderful organization achieve its fullest potential.

The World is giant drum just waiting to be played…

There is a world class Arabic drummer coming to DC and an wonderful oud player and ensemble teacher. If you've ever had any interest in Arabic music or just want to try something a little different, now is the time. Both beginning an advanced classes will be held. There are also accompanying dance workshops if you are into that. Tell all your musician friends, this is not to be missed.

Dear Dancers & Musicians.
I want to invite you to a RARE opportunity to study with Master teachers of Arabic Dance & Music.
On July 14 & 15, Souhail Kaspar (Master of Arabic Percussion), Rachid Halihal (renowned oudist) and Dahlena, an American bellydance icon will be teaching AND performing in Silver Spring, MD.

Classes Include:
1) Souhail’s Drum Solo for Dancer’s: Spice up your drum solo! Souhail will help you break down common riffs in drum solos and know how to dance to them. This is your chance to work with a Master drummer, but don’t be nervous! Souhail is friendly, approachable and fun! You will leave this class with a better understanding of drum solos, Arabic rhythms and how to work with live musicians.
This class will improve your solos whether improvised or choreographed!

2) Classic Egyptian Technique & Choreography with Dahlena: Folks, this is a chance in a lifetime to study with someone who was dancing the cabaret shows in N.Y., L.A. & Chicago in the 70's, who performed with Bobby Farrah, & worked in Iraq & Syria...We will be using Gana el Hawa with Abdel Halim Hafezfor the choreography

3) Modern Saidi with Dahlena - Learn technique and steps to a modern Saidi song to enhance your cabaret performance!

4) Beginning, Intermediate & Advanced Tabla (Dumbek) & Arabic Riqq workshops with Souhail: Learn from the Master himself. Again, do not be intimidated! Souhail is one of the best teachers I have ever met in explaining and teaching Classic Egyptian Technique. All levels of percussionist can benefit from his teaching.

5) Arabic Instrumental Ensemble Classes with Rachid Halihal: Learn an Arabic song, including maqams (Arabic musical scales) & taqsims (improvisations within a maqam). All instruments & levels welcome, includes handouts. Students will learn a piece to perform in Sunday’s hafla.

6) Voice Ensemble with Rachid: Learn an Arabic song including words, pronunciation & meaning, melody & maqam. Includes handouts. Students will learn a piece to perform in Sunday’s hafla.

World Beat band seeks keyboard player

Janelia Soul'Afrique is currently auditioning keyboard players who have a the ability to play in a world beat setting. A February 24th show is being prepared for and will be used as a venue to record a video demo for festivals. A set list is ready and a CD will be provided. Weekly rehearsals required w/ no pay.

The group is a collaborative atmosphere where each player is open to being challenged by the process and also offer creative contributions. Ego and Drama are not acceptable. Comprised of vocalist Janelia Sanya, Femi Sanya (Bass), Papa Kola (Guitar), and d.jaibeyks aka Jason Armstrong Baker (Drums). The group has performed together locally at Clyde's in Columbia. Individually the members have all performed at various festivals around the world.

As the dire-ctor of Fluid Movement and Keytech's entries in the 2006 baltimore kinetic sculpture race,
I'm in need of a portable PA (dc powered) system for a day (5/6/06)
Need it to be, light-ish (not exceeding 50 lbs) , loud-ish and cheap-ish (buckwise).
Can't imagine spending more than $100-200 to rent for a day, as buying a Fender Passport P-250 is in the 600-700 range.

I am writing you as I've been asked my advice on portable sound systems for the baltimore kinetic sculpture race,
and I really don't know much about portable sound systems.

They are considering buying a new Samson XP-300 Portable PA System
